This Friday, October 11, is a big day for the LGBT community and it’s allies and MRSter wants to make sure we support this cause. It is the 25th anniversary of National Coming Out Day, a day to celebrate coming out and give LGBT individuals the opportunity to feel safe and supported when they come out. Celebrated with rallies, parades, film festivals, and more, National Coming Out Day serves as an annual effort to raise government and public awareness of the LGBT community’s fight for equality.
National Coming Out Day is backed by the Human Rights Campaign’s National Coming Out Project and is celebrated in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the UK. The significance of the date is the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights back in ’87.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, 50% of Americans have someone close to them who identifies as gay or lesbian! National Coming Out Day stresses the significance of coming out, because Americans are far more likely to support legal equality when they personally know someone who identifies as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.
We want to hear from you! If you’re an ally, comment below and tell us why you are connected to the LGBT community!
