Marrying Mid-Century Modern

Location // Mountain Shadows Resort, Paradise Valley, AZ, United States

Mountain Shadows Resort, originally built in 1959, has returned as a fresh face in Paradise Valley, Arizona after undergoing a complete rebuild. Perfectly nestled below Camelback Mountain and Mummy Mountain, the resort earned its namesake from the shadows cast by the iconic silhouettes each afternoon. The upscale locale was an instant success, catering to the likes of international travelers, visiting families, and Hollywood stars.

Mountain Shadows was reintroduced in 2017 and stands at the heart of Paradise Valley once more. Traces of the past can be found throughout the resort, from the name of the restaurant to iconic breeze block by the pool. Whether they follow in the footsteps of past globetrotters or happen to live down the street, every guest experiences the same warm hospitality, modern elegance, and beautiful scenery that made Mountain Shadows a beloved destination for decades.

Our team of creatives for this styled shoot wanted to connect the gorgeous environment of the resort to the mid-century vibe that the hotel has embraced. Showing affordable options with a gender neutral feel and design that could be embraced by any couple was the focus of this shoot. We topped it off by photographing a same-sex couple to show that the resort welcomes and celebrates all weddings.

Todd and Eddie, our handsome grooms, have been married for several years but never had a wedding. On the day they were married, Todd took Eddie and a few key family members on a trip down memory lane that led them through Todd’s hometown. The tour ended at the courthouse much to everyone’s surprise, including Eddie’s, where they got married minutes before closing time. Being photographed in their finest, toasting their new life as husbands, and feeding each other wedding cake was not in the cards on their wedding day, but today we were able to celebrate that moment for them, even if it was just for fun.

Phoenix, ARIZONA :: Kishia & Jen :: Colorful Farm Wedding // Real LGBTQ Wedding

Kishia and Jen wanted a beautiful outdoor casual morning celebration of their love and {MRSter Approved} The Farm at South Mountain couldn’t have been a better backdrop to their day. They had musician friends playing guitar and singing throughout the day, including a special song sung during the ceremony. Both Kishia and Jen’s daughters were in the ceremony, and two friends married them and did a fabulous job with the ceremony.

I could see Kishia and Jen’s love for their tribe throughout the wedding. I loved the moment right before the kiss where the officiant made the two wait for the big moment, causing hearty laughs from Kishia, Jen and their guests before he finally let them have their kiss to seal the deal!

It was such an honor to document their joy-filled, colorful wedding and Jen and Kishia were so open and warm and joyful.

Rachel and Laura had a charming St. Paul, Minnesota wedding that took place in Irvine Park, and the reception followed across the street at the Science Museum of Minnesota.

They incorporated all things they love in to their special day, which included; Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Harry Potter! All of the details they put into their wedding complimented the locations perfectly, and signified their relationship.

It was a perfect day for the two of them, and it felt as if you had just entered the world that they share together. Beautiful.

From the Grooms’ ::

The morning of the wedding, we slept in and had a relaxing morning before it was time to begin getting prepared for the ceremony that evening. Our photographers and videographers arrived at the hotel and captured every moment from us getting ready to begin our new journey as a married couple. We exchanged gifts with each other; Shane surprised Michael with scales-of-justice cufflinks and an artist to capture the ceremony on canvas. Michael surprised Shane with a pair of custom designed cufflinks with their names and wedding date and a pair of Christian Louboutins just for the wedding night.

The décor and ambiance of the entire space was everything we hoped for. The reception space was filled with bright yellow roses, custom designed topiaries at the altar with over 9,000 rose petals, crystal, and draping oncidium orchids. As guests entered the reception space, they were greeted with a candlelit, swanky lounge space filled with the fragrance of Tyler Candle’s TwentyFourSeven Glam. The guests located their table with a digital, touch-screen interface which guided them to their seat. The room was filled with yellow flowers, black candles, crystals, and draping oncidium orchids.

During the cocktail hour, servers passed hors d’oeuvres which consisted of braised duck breast topped with blackberry chutney, seared ahi tuna atop a wonton crisp, and mini truffle twice-baked potatoes with caviar. The plated dinner started with an Asian salad tossed in a sesame ginger dressing served in black Chinese take-out containers. For the main course, each guest was served with their choice of filet mignon or chicken marsala with teriyaki grilled salmon. The sides included smoked gouda potato au gratin and a display of grilled vegetables. After the cake cutting, each guest was served a slice of cake with a layer of black velvet cake and yellow butter cake filling with cream cheese frosting.

Before we started a night of partying on the dance floor, Michael’s sister and Shane’s best friend gave heartfelt toasts wishing us happiness and success as we begin the rest of our life together.

Immediately after the toasts, the band brought the crowd to their feet for what became a night full of dancing. The band played non-stop music of classic hits as well as hits from today and filled the room with high energy. As the night began to come to close, the band brought us on stage to perform our exit song, “Proud Mary.” We danced on the stage and sang with the band as they made our exit GRAND! The lead singer of the band started a train and led the crowd outside the venue as they lined up for our exit. The guests showered us in yellow rose petals as we exited the reception. We both love our diet Dr. Pepper and Diet Coke, so we drove away in Shane’s white Mercedes convertible with our diet soda cans tied to the back! As they left the reception, each guest was provided with an individually boxed swiss chocolate cupcake.

Our wedding was everything that we could have wanted. All of the details were executed perfectly the night of our wedding. We are extremely grateful for our incredible vendors that made our event a success.

Bold. Bright. Beautiful.

I have never seen so much love and emotion at a wedding. You could see how much this day meant to both guys, and every friend and family member that attended.

The stylish grooms wore blue bow ties that matched beautifully with the wedding party attire. The sunglasses and bold pops of color from the sunflowers simply added to the happiness of the day!

Queen Creek, ARIZONA :: Brandon & Corbin :: Rustic Farm Romance // Real LGBT Wedding

Submitted by :: Groom, and MRSter Advisory Board Member, Corbin Chamberlin

Corbin Chamberlin, a journalist who contributes to the New York Times, Financial Times and among others, Elle Magazine finally met Mr. perfect with Brandon Randall. The wedding was extremely intimate, with about a 100 guests who flew all the way to little Arizona from Switzerland, Tokyo, New Zealand and Minnesota. Both Brandon and Corbin are originally small-town boys, so the venue, Scnhepf Farms was perfect. The ceremony took place in the backyard of the farmhouse. Simple white chairs sat underneath massive pine tress, lit by the setting Arizona sun. Brandon and Corbin’s daughters took part in the wedding, Harlow (4) was the flowergirl-extrodinare, and little Everly (1) helped her dad, Corbin get down the aisle. After the ceremony, the guests walked a few hundred feet to the peach orchard where a long white table, adorned with rustic arrangements held dinner. Serenaded by a singular guitarist, dinner was smashing. Toasts were given and the two grooms couldn’t stop smiling. The juxtaposition of a few glamorous Editor-in-Cheifs, celebrities and bloggers sitting in the rustic farm setting  just seemed right. After the cake was cut and best-wishes were given, Brandon and Corbin took off in their getaway car, provided by Rolls-Royce.

This was a simple, and sweet Minnesota summer barn wedding. Horses roamed the land, and family and friends came together to witness their marriage. Afterwards they celebrated at the barn, gorged on cupcakes, and danced the night away.

Liz & Sarah :: Rustic Simplicity :: Evergreen, Colorado // Real LGBT Wedding

Submitted by :: Bride, Sarah Thoma

Our June wedding was held in a gorgeous barn in Evergreen, CO. This venue allowed our out of state guests to experience a real mountain wedding feel, the environment was casual, relaxed and suited our personalities very well. Our décor was rustic and simple as the barn itself was so beautiful it really only took minimal decorating to make the place perfect. It was a very non traditional wedding in a gorgeous setting, full of an eclectic group of friends and family, dancing, singing, playing lawn games, giving tearful speeches and lots of love & laughs. The best part of the day was waking up with my future wife. It is quite non traditional to wake up next to each other on your wedding day, but it really was the best!  We calm each other down; we were both nervous about the day, so having each other by our sides all day made us feel a little more at ease.

Nontraditional. Rustic Simplicity. Love and Laughter.

Bill & Darryl :: Our Perfect Day :: Tucson, Arizona // Real LGBT Wedding

:: Our Perfect Day ::

Submitted by :: Groom, Darryl Howard

Our wedding weekend was amazing! We hosted 100 guests at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain in late September 2014. The weekend was a beautiful gathering of family and friends. The wedding was held on Saturday, 9/20. The ceremony and reception were outdoors at the base of the mountains, as dusk, as the sun started to tuck just behind the mountains and the sky glowed a magical rainbow of reds, golds, yellows, oranges and ambers. There were pretty memorable toasts from our wedding parties and heartwarming first dances with our mothers. Bill and I worked on our wedding details for one year. Everything was executed perfectly and not one beat was missed, thanks to the help of the staff at The Ritz. We had a vintage Polaroid camera table and guestbook for our guest to leave photo messages for us. After a 5 course meal, the night moved into dancing under the Kiva and then into the Members Grill with an afterglow buffet of chicken wings, french fries, quesadilla and homemade cookies (made by Darryl’s mother). We danced the night away and loved every second of our special day.

Thanks to The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain for welcoming us and making our guest feel at home. Our day was perfect! There was not one missed step in the execution of the wedding and events surrounding the weekend.  We were showered with love and support from all corners of the country. Our guests traveled from near and far to celebrate with us.
