Marrying Mid-Century Modern

Location // Mountain Shadows Resort, Paradise Valley, AZ, United States

Mountain Shadows Resort, originally built in 1959, has returned as a fresh face in Paradise Valley, Arizona after undergoing a complete rebuild. Perfectly nestled below Camelback Mountain and Mummy Mountain, the resort earned its namesake from the shadows cast by the iconic silhouettes each afternoon. The upscale locale was an instant success, catering to the likes of international travelers, visiting families, and Hollywood stars.

Mountain Shadows was reintroduced in 2017 and stands at the heart of Paradise Valley once more. Traces of the past can be found throughout the resort, from the name of the restaurant to iconic breeze block by the pool. Whether they follow in the footsteps of past globetrotters or happen to live down the street, every guest experiences the same warm hospitality, modern elegance, and beautiful scenery that made Mountain Shadows a beloved destination for decades.

Our team of creatives for this styled shoot wanted to connect the gorgeous environment of the resort to the mid-century vibe that the hotel has embraced. Showing affordable options with a gender neutral feel and design that could be embraced by any couple was the focus of this shoot. We topped it off by photographing a same-sex couple to show that the resort welcomes and celebrates all weddings.

Todd and Eddie, our handsome grooms, have been married for several years but never had a wedding. On the day they were married, Todd took Eddie and a few key family members on a trip down memory lane that led them through Todd’s hometown. The tour ended at the courthouse much to everyone’s surprise, including Eddie’s, where they got married minutes before closing time. Being photographed in their finest, toasting their new life as husbands, and feeding each other wedding cake was not in the cards on their wedding day, but today we were able to celebrate that moment for them, even if it was just for fun.

Stephanie & Jessica shared their wedding vows in February, amongst their closest family and friends. The venue they chose for their big day was Noahs Event Venue in Chandler, Arizona. They decorated the event center with their favorite books, and guests were given coloring book marks to doodle on! The dessert table was filled with delicious cupcakes and their cheescake wedding cake that had the cutest little toppers!

Their love for each other is truly special.

Milwaukee, WISCONSIN :: Ken & Jay :: Home Is Where The Heart Is // Real LGBTQ Wedding

:: Home Is Where The Heart Is ::

Ken & Jay recently got married in Boston, MA, where the two of them live. Having so much love for their family and friends, they decided to have two wedding receptions, one in each of their home states: Wisconsin and Rhode Island. We were lucky enough to be the photographers for their celebration at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the day couldn’t have gone any better!

We met up with the two handsome grooms in Café Calatrava, where some finishing touches were being made to their reception decor, and they helped each other with their bow ties- so sweet! Then we made our way around the stunning, modern museum to capture some portraits of the newlyweds. Windhover Hall, as well as all the other inspiring architectural elements, made the perfect backdrop. They were so sweet with each other, and we could tell what a wonderful pair they are.

Soon they joined their family and friends for some pictures before heading to cocktail hour. The details came together perfectly, including a cleverly illustrated menu, Jeopardy game instructions, custom place settings, etc. They also made donations in honor of their guests to Autism Speaks and the National Kidney Foundation.

Everyone enjoyed taking in the views of the Milwaukee cityscape and lakefront before it was time for dinner. Afterward, some really thoughtful, touching speeches and toasts were made. Then guests were treated to an absolutely amazing video montage that told Ken & Jay’s story, beautifully illustrated their relationship and concluded with their ceremony (cue tears of joy filling the room).

Since the two of them love playing games, they presented a game of Jeopardy for everyone to partake! It was so clever, and we loved capturing their guests having so much fun! Afterward, Ken & Jay were welcomed to the dance floor for their First Dance as newlyweds. And throughout the evening, the talented band kept the dance floor packed! Everyone was having a blast watching the band, decorating themselves with glow-sticks and dancing the night away! What a party!

Pyrénées-Orientales, FRANCE :: Benjamin & Daniel :: Charming Château In France // Real LGBTQ Wedding

:: Charming Château In France ::

Photographed by :: Lemon Three Photo

After more than 8 years of a long-distance relationship; Daniel living in London, UK and Benjamin in Perpignan, France, we decided to tie the knot in the south of France, close to Benjamin’s home town. The wedding was the coming together of both of our families.

The organisation of the wedding was challenging as Daniel was still living in the UK, and Benjamin in France. This meant that precious weekends were spent meeting suppliers, food tasting, and organizing, well… everything. The rest was done via Skype – and thank goodness for our Wedding Planner, Sarah, who managed this with ease! Another challenge we faced was ensuring that both our English and French families felt at ease. To do this, we made sure that all elements and written communication were done in both languages.

The moment we saw Château Valmy, we knew this was the place we wanted to get married. The castle is set in the beautiful region of the Pyrénées-Orientales; with stunning views of the Mediterranean sea on one side, and the Pyrenees mountains on the other. The castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens and its own vineyard.

With the grand setting we wanted the wedding to reflect this as well. We opted for a Black Tie dress code (which was pretty unusual for our French guests who are not so used to Black Tie events). Preparations took part in the castle itself. The wedding ceremony took place in two parts; the morning at the town hall for the official signing of the papers, and then at 4.30pm in the afternoon in the gardens of the castle. The decor was simple and elegant with white chairs and a large arch of Giposofilia. Bridesmaids bouquets and the groom’s button holes were a mixture of deep red roses and Calla Lily. The ceremony was conducted by the mayor of a local town (the same one from the morning), who is a close family friend. Readings from our nearest and dearest, were mixed between English and French so all guests could understand.

The cocktail reception followed in the castle’s vineyard with magnificent views of the vineyard and the sea, with a jazz band playing softly in the background. Wines were from the vineyard and 16 different canapes were served with chef stations scattered in the garden. The evening dinner then followed indoors. Decoration was elegant and understated, with emphasis put on lighting and candles, with a simple Gipsofilia centerpiece.

Speeches from  Benjamin’s brother and Daniel’s father then led to the champagne toast, entrance of the croque en bouche tower, and then an evening with an open bar and DJ from Ibiza… We partied until 6am!

San Antonio, TEXAS :: Rachel & Nelson :: One Beautiful Summer Day // Real Wedding

:: One Beautiful Summer Day ::

Photographed by :: Parker of The PK Photographs

I was so excited when I pulled up to The Lodge at Country Inn Cottages. Picture hay bales and open fields, surrounding a beautiful stone and wood lodge set near a hillside. The cottages up the hill are where Nelson and his groomsmen were getting ready, while Rachel and her bridesmaids were in the Bridal Suite at the Lodge.  The sky was the brightest of blues, with a few perfectly shaped white clouds, and the wind did a great job of overcoming the heat of an outdoor summer wedding in Texas.

The ceremony was short, sweet, and beautiful. There were a few tears, a few laughs, and Rachel and Nelson couldn’t stop smiling at each other. A few cows even wandered into the field beside their ceremony to watch this beautiful couple tie the knot! After their ceremony, there was a reception with heart-warming toasts and beautiful dances. Such a beautiful event with beautiful, kind families and friends of this beautiful bride and groom, ending with the bride and groom dancing the night away with friends on the dance floor.

From the Grooms’ ::

The morning of the wedding, we slept in and had a relaxing morning before it was time to begin getting prepared for the ceremony that evening. Our photographers and videographers arrived at the hotel and captured every moment from us getting ready to begin our new journey as a married couple. We exchanged gifts with each other; Shane surprised Michael with scales-of-justice cufflinks and an artist to capture the ceremony on canvas. Michael surprised Shane with a pair of custom designed cufflinks with their names and wedding date and a pair of Christian Louboutins just for the wedding night.

The décor and ambiance of the entire space was everything we hoped for. The reception space was filled with bright yellow roses, custom designed topiaries at the altar with over 9,000 rose petals, crystal, and draping oncidium orchids. As guests entered the reception space, they were greeted with a candlelit, swanky lounge space filled with the fragrance of Tyler Candle’s TwentyFourSeven Glam. The guests located their table with a digital, touch-screen interface which guided them to their seat. The room was filled with yellow flowers, black candles, crystals, and draping oncidium orchids.

During the cocktail hour, servers passed hors d’oeuvres which consisted of braised duck breast topped with blackberry chutney, seared ahi tuna atop a wonton crisp, and mini truffle twice-baked potatoes with caviar. The plated dinner started with an Asian salad tossed in a sesame ginger dressing served in black Chinese take-out containers. For the main course, each guest was served with their choice of filet mignon or chicken marsala with teriyaki grilled salmon. The sides included smoked gouda potato au gratin and a display of grilled vegetables. After the cake cutting, each guest was served a slice of cake with a layer of black velvet cake and yellow butter cake filling with cream cheese frosting.

Before we started a night of partying on the dance floor, Michael’s sister and Shane’s best friend gave heartfelt toasts wishing us happiness and success as we begin the rest of our life together.

Immediately after the toasts, the band brought the crowd to their feet for what became a night full of dancing. The band played non-stop music of classic hits as well as hits from today and filled the room with high energy. As the night began to come to close, the band brought us on stage to perform our exit song, “Proud Mary.” We danced on the stage and sang with the band as they made our exit GRAND! The lead singer of the band started a train and led the crowd outside the venue as they lined up for our exit. The guests showered us in yellow rose petals as we exited the reception. We both love our diet Dr. Pepper and Diet Coke, so we drove away in Shane’s white Mercedes convertible with our diet soda cans tied to the back! As they left the reception, each guest was provided with an individually boxed swiss chocolate cupcake.

Our wedding was everything that we could have wanted. All of the details were executed perfectly the night of our wedding. We are extremely grateful for our incredible vendors that made our event a success.

We kept things simple, black and white so everybody looked good. We had a friend take our pictures so that we could edit them ourselves because we’re photographers.

We had 18 guests, a simple ceremony at the Registry Office. The meal was at a local restaurant that set off a section for us for a three course meal. It was perfect.

It was really nice to see our friends there celebrating our union. Everyone was supportive, we had a couple of surprises from best friends and even a surprise speech from my Dad.

Our friend did a reading at the ceremony and winked at me at the end, and I also went through the whole ceremony with a piece of fluff on my face which Daniel removed when we were singing the register… So there was quite a few laughs.

Queen Creek, ARIZONA :: Brandon & Corbin :: Rustic Farm Romance // Real LGBT Wedding

:: Rustic Farm Romance ::

Submitted by :: Groom, and MRSter Advisory Board Member, Corbin Chamberlin

Corbin Chamberlin, a journalist who contributes to the New York Times, Financial Times and among others, Elle Magazine finally met Mr. perfect with Brandon Randall. The wedding was extremely intimate, with about a 100 guests who flew all the way to little Arizona from Switzerland, Tokyo, New Zealand and Minnesota. Both Brandon and Corbin are originally small-town boys, so the venue, Scnhepf Farms was perfect. The ceremony took place in the backyard of the farmhouse. Simple white chairs sat underneath massive pine tress, lit by the setting Arizona sun. Brandon and Corbin’s daughters took part in the wedding, Harlow (4) was the flowergirl-extrodinare, and little Everly (1) helped her dad, Corbin get down the aisle. After the ceremony, the guests walked a few hundred feet to the peach orchard where a long white table, adorned with rustic arrangements held dinner. Serenaded by a singular guitarist, dinner was smashing. Toasts were given and the two grooms couldn’t stop smiling. The juxtaposition of a few glamorous Editor-in-Cheifs, celebrities and bloggers sitting in the rustic farm setting  just seemed right. After the cake was cut and best-wishes were given, Brandon and Corbin took off in their getaway car, provided by Rolls-Royce.

Even after 3 years, the wedding of Marti Hoffer and Jessica Conaway on Sunday 22nd 2012 still stands out in my mind. One, because it was such a fun wedding not only to create flowers for, but also to attend as a guest. Secondly, it was such a moving ceremony. The ceremony took place at Shadow Rock Church with these floor to ceiling windows that only added to the spirituality of the entire ceremony. Marti and Jessica both carried these gorgeous bouquets full of Schwartzwalder calla lilies and Black Magic roses, which really popped against their white attire. After a very sweet ceremony, guests moved to the Bentley Gallery for a crazy reception. The couple wanted an interesting table set, so we combined rectangular Roman tables, circular tables, and round tables to create a large variety. The tables were full of candles really setting a beautiful ambiance with the gallery. The escort cards were hung on weighted ribbon tailings suspended from the ceiling with place cards attached to them, which ended up look like a really cool art installation that complimented the venue and the eclectic art on the walls. A coffee food truck was also brought into the venue and we made a little donut station right next to it.
